WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN HIRING A REGLAZING COMPANY?

A few things to consider:  Verify their permanancy in the trade: (1) Are they listed in your local phone books? {ex: both AT&T & Yellow Book?}, (2) Do they have a Bussiness address listed? {Tough to collect on warranty repairs when a business is transient}, (3) Is the phone number listed a Business line or a Cell phone? {Again it's can be tough to get service if a business is transient}, (4) Is the business registered with the county or state? (5) Is the business liciensed as a contractor with your state? {This is not the same as being "registered" as a business} [Ex: the ONLY trade in Michigan that IS NOT required to be liciensed is Drywall]. (6) How long has the company been in business? {Realizing however, every business had to have a first year in business, this is just something to consider} (7) Are they members of the local Better Business Bureau? {Realizing again, just because a company doesn't belong, doesn't mean he doesn't do good work. But, Businesses that are Better Business Bureau members do subcribe to a high quality code of business ethics.}

A word about Competitors:  Competition in business can be a good thing, both for businesses and for consumers. Competition as a business, causes us to continually refine our process, skills, and customer relations. As a customer you also win in that it keeps pricing at a fair market level.  But now comes some work for you as a consumer; that is to find the best value for your project and to choose a competent contractor.

The State of Michigan requires a contractor to be Licensed by the State and have Liability Insurance , don’t hesitate to check for these. Another excellent Consumers Advocate is your local Better Business Bureau. The BBB reports on both BBB Accredited and Non-Accredited businesses. Give them a call or check their website for information regarding the contractors that you’re considering to use.

Don’t take Yellow Pages Ads at face value. Example: While we do have some respectable competitors, some of our competition, claim to have been in business much longer than they actually have been, while others falsely claim to be BBB Members and have unsatisfactory reports, some change names every few years in order to dodge warranty problems, some are transient and don’t list business addresses.

We encourage you to check all businesses before choosing a contractor for your project.

WHAT IS THE REGLAZING PROCESS?

1. Caulking is removed
2. Overflow cover and drain screen is removed
3. (Porcelain/Ceramic) Tub is etched using hydrofluoric acid, this chemically sands the porcelain to accept the finish. (Fiberglass) Tub is cleaned and 220 wet sanded.                                                                                                                                                  4. Any chips and cracks are repaired using fiberglass and acrylic marine fillers.
5. Surrounding areas are masked.
6. Tub is tacked out for dust.
7. (Porcelain/Ceramic) clear Epoxy Primer is sprayed on. (This primer is a glass primer, so it is designed to stick to things that are very slick; this is also why we’re comfortable in offering a lifetime warranty) {For Fiberglass and Acrylic Tubs - we next apply a clear adhesive primer specificly designed for flexable surfaces}
8. Spray on a white catalyzed Epoxy Primer.
9. Final tack out for dust.
10. Spray final topcoats of glazing (Awlgrip Acrylic Urethane)

IS THIS THE SAME AS THE (DIY) DO IT YOURSELF KITS?

No! 1: DIY Kits are an epoxy, which is fine for a primer but NOT for a finish topcoat. (epoxies don't hold their gloss or color retention = they yellow and go flat)  2: The DIY Kits do not contain or recommend any primer, you MUST use primer!  (it makes me laugh when I read on the DIY instructions = "Guaranteed for use with Hot Water" = I would hope so! 3: A profesionally reglazed tub uses an Acid to etch/prep the tub for proper adhesion. (these etching solutions are not available to the general public).  4: The typical homeowner doesnot have the equipment or expertise to "Spray" the tub finish without getting many runs in the tub finish and overspray thoughout the home, SO they resort to "Brushing " the finish, which often leaves brush marks and runs in the finished product. 5: DIY Kits usually end up peeling within a year. Most Profesional Reglazers charge $100.00 + to strip a previously painted tub. Thus save yourself time and money, by getting it done right the first time. (and you get a guarantee!)

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR THE REGLAZING OF MY TUB?

Make sure the tub is reasonably clean, remove shower curtain or doors, remove knick-knacks etc. from the area, make sure the faucets don’t drip, if necessary have them repaired or replaced BEFORE the reglazing process.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REGLAZE A TUB?

Depending upon the condition of the tub, usually 2-3 hours.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE I CAN USE THE TUB?

You need to not use the tub for 48 hours. It will be dry to the touch before then but it needs time for the product to cure and develop its bond to the porcelain or fiberglass.

I'M REMODELING MY BATHROOM, WHEN IN THE PROCESS SHOULD MY TUB BE REGLAZED?

Usually reglazing should be done at or near the end of your project, when there is less construction dust and when it is less likely to be used as a tool box or have things dropped into it by work going on around the area.

WHAT COLORS ARE AVAILABLE?

Standard Colors are Brite White, Standard White, Bone and Kohler Bisquit. Most customers choose the Standard White or Bone depending on the color of their Sink and Toilet.  However most Kohler and American Standard and Elger colors are available at varied additional charges.

WHAT IS THE WARRANTY?

We warranty the tub reglazing against defects in materials and workmanship, not to craze, blister or peel. In other words, we guarantee the adhesion of the glaze. Keep in mind this does not mean it is indestructible. Example: If heavy or sharp objects are dropped into it, it could chip, However it can be repaired, just give us a call and we’ll get a touchup kit to you or we can make the repair for you.

HOW LONG IS THE WARRANTY GOOD FOR?

We offer a 5 year warranty for your personal residence.   (*The warranty is not transferable if/when you sell the home.)

Warranty for rental properties is 1 year. (The process is exactly the same, but due to neglect by some tenants, rental properties carry a one year warranty.)

HOW LONG WILL THE FINISH LAST?

With normal use and proper cleaning and care it can last many years. (10+)

MY FIBERGLASS TUB IS CRACKED IN THE BOTTOM, WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

Fiberglass Tub & Shower Bottoms, can be permanantly repaired using our "Fiberglass Tub Inlay System".  You can learn more about this process on our "Fiberglass Tub" page.

CAN ANYTHING BE DONE TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR ME TO GET INTO THE TUB?

Yes! We now have the ability to convert your existing tub to a "Step In Shower" making it much easier and safer for Seniors and others with limited mobility, to enter their tub area. See our "Handicap Tub Access" page for more details.

I HAVE LOOSE TILES AND MY GROUT IS IN POOR CONDITION, WILL REGLAZING REMEDY THIS?

Reglazing for the most part is cosmetic, it will not repair leaky or loose tiles. Loose Tile and Regrouting should be repaired prior to reglazing. For this service we recommend contacting:  "Grout Matters"  (616) 682-0252   www.grout-matters.com
